> *Summary*
>
>
> *Casting cleanup bridges the gap between the foundry floor and the machine shop by removing residual gating, excess flash, and surface impurities from raw metal castings. At K&H Precision Products, this linear preparation stage incorporates necessary heat treatment, artificial aging, and sandblasting to deliver parts optimized for tight CNC machining tolerances. Keeping this intermediate step integrated in-house eliminates multi-vendor handoffs, preserving part quality and speeding up overall production turnaround.*

## **Turning a Raw Casting Into a Part Ready for Its Next Step**

When a casting comes out of the foundry, the basic shape of the customer’s part is there, but the work isn’t finished.

Before that casting can move into secondary machining or toward its final destination, it needs to be prepared for what comes next.

That’s the role of [Casting Cleanup at K&H Precision Products.](https://kandhprecision.com/gallery/#Casting%20cleanup%20department)

## **From the Foundry Floor to a Clean Casting**

During the casting process, molten metal travels through a gating system designed to deliver metal into the mold cavity. When the casting is removed from the mold, portions of that gating are still attached to the part.

The first step is removing it.

Depending on the part, additional material known as *flash* may also need to be removed. The Casting Cleanup team works through these areas, removing excess material and cleaning the casting so it is ready for the next stage of production.

For parts that will be machined at K&H, required heat treatment and artificial aging may also occur as part of the process before final cleanup and machining.

It may sound like a simple transition between departments, but it serves an important purpose: the Machine Shop needs a properly prepared casting before precision machining can begin.

## **Why Cleanup Matters**

In manufacturing, every department inherits the work of the department before it, and prepares the part for the department after it.

Casting Cleanup is a good example.

The Foundry has successfully produced the casting. The Machine Shop may eventually add the precision features and tolerances the customer requires. In between, Casting Cleanup makes sure the raw casting is properly prepared to continue that journey.

For customers, that coordinated process matters.

Our processes are structured in a linear workflow to maximize efficiency as each part moves from one department to the next. This approach eliminates unnecessary back-and-forth between departments, keeping production moving forward while supporting speed, accuracy, and consistency.

Rather than moving a casting between unrelated vendors for different stages of production, K&H can keep the part moving through an interconnected process where teams understand what has already happened to the part and what needs to happen next.

## **One More Step Toward the Finished Part**

By the time a casting leaves Cleanup, excess gating and flash have been removed, the part has been sand blasted, and, when required, additional treatment has been completed.

Now the casting is ready for one of the most important transformations in the process.

It moves to K&H’s Machine Shop, where CNC machining begins turning its cast shape into the precise component specified by the customer.

Casting Cleanup may happen behind the scenes, but it plays an important role in moving every part closer to what matters most: a finished component that is ready to perform the job it was designed to do.

## **Frequently Asked Questions:**

**Q: What is casting cleanup in metal manufacturing?**

**A:** Casting cleanup is the post-foundry process of preparing raw castings for secondary finishing. It involves removing excess metal from mold gating systems, trimming parting-line flash, sandblasting surface impurities, and completing required thermal processes—like heat treatment or artificial aging—so the raw part meets baseline specifications for subsequent operations.

**Q: Why is casting cleanup critical before precision CNC machining?**

**A:** Casting cleanup is critical because CNC machine fixtures require uniform, clean datum surfaces to properly locate parts and hold tight tolerances. Removing residual gating and flash ensures the component sits flat in machining jigs, preventing dimensional inaccuracies, tool deflection, and equipment damage during precision cuts.

**Q:  What is the benefit of keeping casting cleanup in-house rather than outsourcing?**

**A:**  Keeping cleanup in-house creates a closed-loop linear workflow between the foundry and machine shop. This eliminates transit delays, reduces shipping costs between disconnected vendors, mitigates risk of handling damage, and allows machining teams to communicate directly with cleanup operators on exact part-holding requirements.
